{"id":17,"date":"2009-10-04T20:00:24","date_gmt":"2009-10-05T01:00:24","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/ammonsengineering.com\/wordpress\/?p=15"},"modified":"2009-12-04T23:54:02","modified_gmt":"2009-12-05T04:54:02","slug":"initial-design","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ammonsengineering.com\/blog\/2009\/10\/initial-design\/","title":{"rendered":"Initial Design"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"attachment_9\" style=\"width: 610px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"http:\/\/ammonsengineering.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/12\/Inv-Pendulum-v1.pdf\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-9\" class=\"size-full wp-image-9  \" title=\"Inverted Pendulum v1\" src=\"http:\/\/ammonsengineering.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/12\/Inv-Pendulum-v1.gif\" alt=\"Inv Pendulum v1\" width=\"600\" height=\"150\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ammonsengineering.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/12\/Inv-Pendulum-v1.gif 600w, https:\/\/ammonsengineering.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/12\/Inv-Pendulum-v1-300x75.gif 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-9\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Inverted Pendulum Design v1 (pdf)<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Drew the plans for the system up in CorelDraw.\u00a0 Each view is drawn full scale on a single page.<\/p>\n<p>The system will consist of a cart that is supported in the back by a linear bearing.\u00a0 The front of the cart will be supported by a rack and pinion gear system.\u00a0 A motor on the cart will turn the gear to move the cart.\u00a0 An encoder will be next to the motor with a smaller spur gear that meshes with the large one on the motor.\u00a0 This encoder will measure the position of the cart.\u00a0 An encoder on the other side of the cart will support the pendulum and allow it to swing freely while it measures the position of the pendulum.\u00a0 The whole system will be mounted on a wooden shelf, which will have space in the front for the cart system and space in the back to mount a power supply and the control system.\u00a0 It would be nice to have some limit switches to prevent the cart from hitting the ends of the shaft, but those will probably be added later.<\/p>\n<p>Right now my estimate is that the cart will be about 1.5 kg, and the pendulum will be about 0.25 kg.\u00a0 Picking the right motor is the critical item right now.\u00a0 I would like something that can travel the entire length of the track in one to two seconds, and has enough torque to rapidly accelerate the cart.<\/p>\n<p>Hopefully, the whole system will be controlled using an NI cRIO unit with a 9505 motor controller unit and 9411 digital input unit to read the pendulum encoder.\u00a0 I will have to talk to NI to find out if I can somehow borrow the equipment for a few months.\u00a0 It is a little too expensive to buy for a hobby.\u00a0 If I can\u2019t borrow the equipment, I have a few other ideas of how the controls could be implemented.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Drew the plans for the system up in CorelDraw.\u00a0 Each view is drawn full scale on a single page.
