{"id":75,"date":"2009-11-23T20:00:44","date_gmt":"2009-11-24T01:00:44","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/ammonsengineering.com\/blog\/?p=75"},"modified":"2009-12-05T00:58:04","modified_gmt":"2009-12-05T05:58:04","slug":"cart-completed","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ammonsengineering.com\/blog\/2009\/11\/cart-completed\/","title":{"rendered":"Cart Completed"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Today I finished cutting and drilling all the parts of the cart.\u00a0 I started with a new piece for the arm that connects the front section to the bearing shaft.\u00a0 The old one was pretty rough on one side since we cut it from an angled piece.\u00a0 Since I had to attach stuff to the top and bottom of the arm, I decided to cut a new arm from the pieces I bought from Online Metals, which gives me nice flush mounting on both sides.\u00a0 Drilled a bunch more holes with the drill press and discovered a few things:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>It is much easier to see the spot punched in the metal if you remove the paper template you used for punching.<\/li>\n<li>A small drill bit will usually \u201cpop\u201d into the punched spot, making things line up very nicely.<\/li>\n<li>A large drill bit has a mind of its own and tends to ignore the punched spots, giving me terrible hole alignment.<\/li>\n<li>Next time, for any hole about 1\/4\u201d or larger, I will drill a smaller hole first, then make it larger.<\/li>\n<li>When drilling a really large hole, start small and step up slowly.\u00a0 Large steps make the drill chatter.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>After drilling several holes that didn\u2019t quite line up, I had to fix them.\u00a0 My first effort is to just drill a slightly larger hole.\u00a0 If that doesn\u2019t work, I use a rotary file to enlarge a hole in a selected direction, making it a little more like a slot.<\/p>\n<p>The final cart assembly looks pretty good.\u00a0 I mounted all the different components onto the cart.\u00a0 I put the broken encoder in the position for the pendulum so I can test the pendulum without breaking another encoder.\u00a0 After I am comfortable with the pendulum behavior I will switch to the working encoder.\u00a0 I used a couple of cable ties to keep the wires from bending and breaking.\u00a0 Eventually they will be replaced with a cable carrier.\u00a0 Funny detail &#8211;
